Step into the living rhythm of Himalayan shepherd life.

Hosted by Yousuf and his extended Gujjar–Bakarwal community, this immersive learning journey begins in Srinagar and moves into the pastoral landscapes of Kashmir—where mobility, family, and livestock shape everyday life.

From your arrival, Yousuf will guide you into his world. Whether staying in his home village of Ringawali near Tangmarg or moving with shepherd camps across the mountains, you won’t be observing from a distance—you’ll be participating.

Learn to milk cows, water buffalo, or goats. Walk with flocks. Share meals. Sit in conversation with families whose lives are woven together across valleys, ridges, and generations.

For those ready to go deeper, extended journeys can include multi-day treks into the highlands—following ancient routes toward the headwaters of the Chenab River, where shepherd camps rest near the Kanital glacier. These routes may pass through remote villages, high mountain ridges, and some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Himalayas.

Each journey adapts to the season, the movement of the flocks, and local conditions. Some days are spent in village life; others may involve trekking between camps or visiting different “layers” of nomadic settlement.

Throughout the experience, relationships are central. Yousuf’s network spans multiple villages and camps, offering rare access to a way of life built on trust, hospitality, and long-standing connections.

This is not tourism as usual.

It’s a shared journey into a world where life is lived together—on the move.

Notes (Safety & Flexibility)

Travel in this region requires flexibility. Routes, access, and timing may shift due to weather, terrain, or regional conditions. All plans are made in close coordination with local communities and authorities, with a strong commitment to safety, respect, and compliance with local regulations.

Guests should come with an open posture—ready to adapt, learn, and move with the rhythm of the land and the people.

Program of the day

Arrival & Houseboat Orientation (Dal Lake, Srinagar)

Begin your journey on a traditional Kashmiri houseboat. These first days help you slow down, adjust to the culture, and prepare for life with shepherd communities.

Explore Dal Lake by boat, including early morning visits to the floating vegetable market and “water trekking” through canals and neighborhoods built on the lake. Share meals and conversations as you begin to understand the region and its people.

Transition to the Foothills (Srinagar → Ringawali)

Travel with Yousuf into the foothills near Tangmarg. Settle into village life, meet the family, and begin participating in the daily rhythm of shepherd life.

Living the Shepherd Rhythm

Join in everyday activities: milking cows, buffalo, or goats, tending animals, gathering fodder, preparing meals, and sharing life together.

Village & Community Life

Spend time in nearby Gujjar villages, connecting with extended family networks. Experience hospitality, conversation, and the deep relational fabric that holds these communities together.

Moving Between Camps (Seasonal)

Depending on the season, visit or stay in one or more shepherd camps across different elevations—experiencing how mobility functions as a shared community resource.

Highland Trek Option (Multi-Day)

For extended journeys, trek into the upper Chenab region. Routes may include high mountain crossings, remote villages, and stays near glacier-fed headwaters where summer shepherd camps are located.

Debrief & Reflection (Return to Dal Lake – Optional)

For longer journeys, return to the houseboat for a final period of rest and reflection.

These days create space to process the experience together—what you’ve learned, what challenged you, and what you will carry forward.

Evenings: Fire, Tea & Conversation

Whether in village homes, camps, or on the lake, evenings are unhurried—shared meals, storytelling, and reflection in community.
